چکیده

The influence of square corners on the ignition of a solid exposed to a step in surface temperature is analyzed by means of large activation energy asymptotics. This study begins by considering the case of a semi-infinite square corner, applicable to the ignition of finite bodies with square corners when the reaction is very fast. Two spatial zones (reactive and inert) and two time stages (initial and transition) are identified. During the initial stage, the structure of the reaction zone is determined by a quasi-stationary problem of the Frank-Kamenetskii type, where the time variable plays the role of the Damkohler number. There is no solution to this problem if the time r is larger than a certain critical value To, which is a first approximation for the ignition time. In a transition stage, for 0 < TO — r <C 1, the nonstationary effects cannot be neglected; when these are taken into account, a first correction to the ignition time is obtained. The ignition of a twodimensional rectangular solid is also described, for which the previous analysis is partially applicable if the Damkohler number Da is large enough. For Da of order unity, an asymptotic analysis is given, in which the process is described in terms of a first inert heating stage and a second reacting stage ending in a thermal runaway. A numerical description is given for the second stage to determine the ignition time in terms of the Damkohler number. Key words, combustion, ignition, thermal runaway, hot spot, activation energy asymptotics, Arrhenius kinetics A M S subject classifications. 35C20, 35K57, 80A25

Effect of Corner Bluntness on Energy Absorbing Capability of Non-circular Metallic Tubes Subjected to Axial Impact

The energy absorbing capability is one of the most important aspects of crushing behavior of a structure subjected to axial impact. In this paper, a simple practical method is introduced to enhance the crushing behavior of this kind of structure. The axial impact of metallic energy absorbing thin-walled tubes with special shaped cross-section is simulated using LS-DYNA software. The effect of c...

Axial Compressive Strength of Reinforced Concrete Columns Wrapped with Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP)

This paper presents the results of a study on the axial compressive strength of columnsstrengthened with FRP wrap. The experimental part of the study included testing 6 reinforcedconcrete columns in two series. The first series comprised three similar circular reinforced concretecolumns strengthened with FRP wrap. The second series consisted of three similar square columns, two with sharp corner...

Effect of electrode erosion on the required ignition voltage of spark plug in CNG spark ignition engine

In this article, the electrode erosion and the gap growth of spark plugs were measured on of a CNG fueled engine after durability tests. Then, the required ignition voltage and the spark quality were investigated by a spark plug test rig. Considering results of measurements, the gap growth increased as the running time increased. Thus, the gap growth of spark plugs with 200 and 280 hours runnin...

Effect of Initial Temperature and EGR on Combustion and Performance Characteristics of Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition Engine Fueled with Dimethyl Ether

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is a pioneer method of combustion in which pre-mixed fuel and oxidizer (typically air) are compressed to the point of auto-ignition. HCCI engines can operate with most alternative fuels, especially, dimethyl ether (DME) which has been tested as a possible diesel fuel due to its simultaneously low NOx and PM emissions. In this paper a ...

Studying the Effect of Reformer Gas and Exhaust Gas Recirculation on Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Engine Operation

Combustion in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine is controlled auto ignition of well-mixed fuel, air and residual gas. Since onset of HCCI combustion depends on the auto ignition of fuel/air mixture, there is no direct control on the start of combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable rather easily especially at lower and higher engine load. Charge strati...
